ABOUT*

Brock Q. Piper (b. 1985) is a Sydney-based artist whose work is characterised by an intricate interplay of narrative, symbolism, and psychological resonance. Through meticulously layered oil paintings, Piper constructs enigmatic interior scenes that explore identity, memory, and emotional interiority. Figures emerge from darkness, engaged in silent exchanges, while wild animals occupy the compositional centre of each work. Together, these elements create contemplative tableaux rich with allegory and psychological symbolism.

Raised on a family farm in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Piper developed an early sensitivity to space, isolation, and storytelling. His practice has also been shaped by extensive travel and exposure to diverse cultural narratives, resulting in a painterly language that traverses personal, political, and philosophical terrain. He holds a Graduate Certificate in Fine Art from the University of Melbourne and was awarded the George Hicks Contemporary Art Prize in 2020.

Each painting begins with gestural charcoal drawings that establish a sense of immediacy and intuition. These foundations are gradually transformed through layers of delicate oil glazes, producing works that are visually complex and emotionally charged. This balance between spontaneity and control mirrors the conceptual tensions that underpin his practice.

Piper’s paintings are populated by recurring archetypes—the king, the navigator, and the scholar—whose symbolic postures and costumes represent aspects of human psychology and existential struggle. Rather than participating in conventional narratives, these figures exist in suspended psychological states, connected through symbolic gestures and tethered by red strings. These motifs evoke orientation, entanglement, and the fragile structures humans construct to navigate uncertainty.

A defining feature of Piper’s work is the inclusion of animals rendered in a manner reminiscent of medieval bestiaries, where creatures were often imagined from second-hand descriptions. In his paintings, these animals function as psychological symbols, embodying suppressed truths, internalised fears, or unresolved emotional conflicts. Often interpreted as the proverbial “elephant in the room,” they disrupt domestic scenes with a silent yet undeniable presence.

Light plays a central symbolic role throughout the work. More than a formal device, it becomes a metaphor for awareness, revelation, and ambiguity. Beams of illumination pierce shadow, exposing fragments of truth while concealing others, reinforcing the tension between clarity and uncertainty.

Piper’s conceptual framework draws upon a diverse range of influences, including Carl Jung, Friedrich Nietzsche, W.G. Sebald, Frank Waters, and Michael Peppiatt, alongside the poetic sensibilities of Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. These influences converge in a practice that privileges psychological depth, symbolic layering, and resistance to fixed interpretation.

Central to Piper’s work is the relationship between artwork and audience. Viewers are not passive observers but active participants, positioned somewhere between their own narratives and those suggested within the paintings. His works do not seek resolution; instead, they invite contemplation, reflection, and self-inquiry.

Through his sophisticated layering of form and concept, Piper offers a contemporary meditation on the human condition. His paintings chart the tensions between instinct and reason, the spoken and the unspoken, and the visible and the hidden, encouraging viewers to dwell in uncertainty and confront the fragile architectures of meaning that shape our inner and outer worlds.
